People with a disability, especially disabled women, are more likely to live in poverty – in fact, poverty rates are twice as high for the disabled population as a whole as they are for the non-disabled population (16.4 percent compared to 8.7 percent).

Despite its relatively large representation among the U.S.’ total population, the disability community remains one of the most socioeconomically depressed subgroups in the country. Issues such as unemployment, homelessness, and food insecurity are still felt by many individuals with disabilities.

People with disabilities face significant barriers to financial stability. Low or unstable income and inadequate health insurance coverage complicate financial decisions. Individuals with disabilities often have a tenuous connection with the labor force because they tend to be employed in low-wage or temporary jobs that are less secure.
